Architecture - Sustainable Design

Because of the nature of our extensive rehabilitation experience, DiGeronimo is expert in techniques for the re-use of materials.

In restoration, materials must be salvaged and used again as a rule, not as an exception, either because of their historic nature, high replacement cost, or both.

This is especially true of doors, windows and trim, as well as exterior elements such as masonry or stone work.  We have also salvaged structural elements such as wooden and steel beams from building portions being demolished for re-use on structures being renovated.  In one instance we re-used an entire building by moving and incorporating it into a new building design planned on the same site, resulting in substantial savings.

DiGeronimo routinely incorporates sustainable design into our renovation projects for the U.S. Postal Service, as participation in the USPS Green Building Program.  Most recently, for the Newark Main Post Office and Court House restoration, we saved and re-used existing door hardware and refurbished old lighting fixtures to original specifications. Lighting specifications also included the use of new energy efficient light bulbs.

For the Morgan Street Post Office Window Replacement project in New York City, we are currently specifying triple-glazed insulated windows to replace the older style single-pane units.  The new windows reduce the effect of exterior heat and cold on the building’s interior, thus lessening the burden of the heating and cooling systems.

For the Hoboken Main Post Office DiGeronimo designed a complete upgrade of the existing HVAC system incorporating two important energy conserving features.  The upgraded system included computerized temperature sensing controls and cycling of outside air. Thus energy is saved in two ways: (1) the system is automatically adjusted in response to the presence of people in the effected areas and (2) energy is saved by cycling cool air into a warm building from outside (or warm air into a cool building from outside) rather than cooling (or heating) the air that is in the building.

Committed to providing exceptional, dependable architectural service, DiGeronimo provides creative solutions to complex building problems. Our success is best illustrated by our record of repeat work for satisfied clients.  Clients find DiGeronimo easy with which to work.  DiGeronimo creates quality architectural designs.
