DiGeronimo, P.A. is sub-consultant to Parsons-Brinkerhoff, as part of the Siemens Transit Team, responsible for Construction Management of Puerto Rico's first light rail line. Tren Urbano, meaning simply, the Urban Train, is a $1.2 billion project traversing 17.2Km of the heavily congested San Juan Metropolitan Region. Phase I, costing $593 million, links Bayamon with Santurce via Guaynabo, Rio Piedras and Hato Rey. It includes 14 stations and a vehicle maintenance and storage facility.

DiGeronimo is supplying schedulers and inspectors for the central, and largest, contract comprised of Torrimar, Las Lomas stations, and the Central Maintenance Depot and Operations Center. This section is budgeted at $275 million. DiGeronimo is improving the baseline schedule, providing cost control support, and preparing coordination scheduling with other alignment contractors.

The Urban Train has received generous praise from federal officials and operators of other rail systems in the U.S. and Canada for the positive impact it could have on reducing automobile traffic congestion in the San Juan Metropolitan Region (SJMR).

Traffic there today is estimated at about 3.2 million vehicular trips per day, giving San Juan one of the world's highest traffic densities. There are nearly 100 vehicles for every kilometer of paved road in the SJMR. Vehicular trips into the area are expected to increase by 45% by the year 2010.

DiGeronimo expertise in Construction Management, and large transit projects will ensure that Tren Urbano will stay on schedule and on budget. The first test running is envisioned in mid-1999, with the start of revenue service beginning by July 2003.
