Main Post Office and Federal Court
House
The New York Construction News Award, Presented by the
New York Construction News Magazine, December 1998 The U.S. Post Office and Court House located at Two Federal
Square in Newark, New Jersey, is a five-story limestone and brick
clad structure completed in 1934 and housing both the Federal District
Courts as well as the Newark Main Post Office and Distribution Center.
Built in the Greek Revival style popular for federal buildings
of the time, the structure is listed on the New Jersey State Register
of Historic Places and with the Newark Historic Landmarks Commission. DiGeronimo completed a comprehensive restoration of this
historic building, including:
With over 100 different types and styles, not to mention different shapes and sizes, window replacement was a major task. DiGeronimo stepped up to the challenge, designing a special window using standard components, and creating a jamb and header fill-in detail. DiGeronimo’s design resulted in cost containment by way of window standardization, while at the same time maintaining the historic integrity of the building’s interiors. Restoration of the exterior masonry and stone to its original
appearance was a also major undertaking including the building’s
facades as well as the stone flagpole bases, stone steps, benches
and stone balustrades located on the site. Whenever possible all
work was performed by hand, employing traditional methods to ensure
compatibility with the original workmanship.
To prevent the stress fractures from reoccurring in the future,
replacement stone and brick were set and installed with soft joints
to help isolate them from the effects of the building’s thermal
movement. The U.S. Post Office and Court House Building in downtown Newark, New Jersey, now stands as it was intended – proud, dignified, and gleaming!
