DiGeronimo
PA is part of the team, led by Frederic R. Harris/Don Todd Associates,
that is performing construction management services for this transfer
station that will allow riders to change trains from New Jersey Transit
lines to Metro-North or Amtrak. The team is currently providing comprehensive
construction management services for NJ Transit’s most expansive project
to date: the $440 million Northeast Corridor (NEC) Modifications Project.
Through expansion of the Northeast Corridor from two to four tracks
between the Portal and Bergen Interlocking (spanning two miles of
electrified track), the project will interconnect NJ Transit’s extensive
commuter rail system at the Meadowlands.

The
NEC project encompasses the construction of a major rail transfer
station along the Northeast Corridor, an integral component of the
massive, Secaucus Transfer/Allied Junction site development project.
This mass transportation-commercial complex will ultimately include
office, hotel and rental space as well as access roads and parking.
Constructed over the course of six years, the project encompasses
several general construction contracts, utility relocation contracts,
equipment procurement contracts and NJ Transit, Amtrak, and Conrail
force account work.
The
project scope entails the implementation of 19,000 linear feet (approximately
four miles) of new track, six #26.5, nine #20, two #15 and two #20
equilateral turnouts and four new distinct interlockings. Construction,
realignment, and reinstallation of all signaling to facilitate the
construction of bridge piers and platforms. Construction of pre-cast,
pre-stressed concrete pile substructure. Construction of 200 piers
supporting the superstructure. Implementation of extensive catenary,
electric traction power, signaling and communication systems. Relocation
of existing AMTRAK and MCI communications wiring. The demolition of
existing bridges, and construction of 50,000 square feet of passenger
platforms.
The
challenge here is: this portion of the Northeast Corridor, in close
proximity to New York City, is the busiest section of railroad in
the Country, accommodating over three hundred trains per day, traveling
through the project site at speeds of 80 MPH. Stringent safety requirements
necessitate off-peak construction, detailed planning, scheduling and
specifications, and meticulous coordination with Amtrak, Conrail and
NJ Transit.
The
new station must rise above the existing complex of train routes without
interfering with the scheduled train service in any way. New temporary
railroad lines must be installed and trains re-routed so construction
workers can erect structures over existing train tracks. At the completion
of the project, trains will be re-routed back to their original tracks.
